Metro is a neologism of metropolitan and usually refers to a high-frequency urban public transport railway, synonymous with "rapid transit", "subway", or "underground"; from "metropolitan railway."

Primarily the word Metro came from: Chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris (Paris Metropolitan Railway Company) or CMP, shortened to "Métropolitain", which itself was derived from the Metropolitan Line of the London Underground. Within its first years, the name was quickly abbreviated to Métro.
