Michael Alfred Chaney AO (born in Perth, Western Australia) is an Australian businessman, and current Chairman of the National Australia Bank, a role which he assumed in September 2005. He was also former Managing Director of Wesfarmers, a post which he left in July 2005 after 13 years with the business.[1]
Son of Sir Fred Chaney, a minister in the Menzies government and brother to Fred Chaney, a former Western Australian Senator, he attended and graduated from Aquinas College, Perth.[2] He also attended the University of Western Australia where he received B.S. and MBA degrees and was subsequently awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree by UWA. In 1992, he completed the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program.[3]
He worked in the finance and petroleum industries in Australia and the United States of America before joining Wesfarmers in 1983. He became a Board member in 1988, and was appointed CEO in 1992.[1]
Chaney's previous experience includes three years in corporate lending and financial advisory roles with the Australian Industry Development Corporation. He is also a director of BHP Billiton Limited and the investment bank, Gresham Partners Holdings Ltd.
Chaney was made an Officer in the Order of Australia on 14 June 2004 for service to the business sector through innovative leadership and management strategies, and to the community through involvement with and support for a broad range of artistic, cultural and scientific organisations.[4]
He is currently also the President of the Business Council of Australia[5][6] and Chancellor of the University of Western Australia[7]
