Michael James Rowland (born January 15, 1964) is an Australian film director.

He studied graphic design at the North Adelaide School of Arts, eventually working as Art Director for the Adelaide Festival of Arts (1987-1993). In 1994 he left his hometown to study at Australia's national film school Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) situated in Sydney. There, his award winning student films Flying Over Mother (1996) [1] and The Existentialist Cowboy's Last Stand (1995) [2] began his reputation as a passionate and original writer/director with a global audience. His first feature film, Lucky Miles, a 105 minute Drama/Comedy has been bought for commercial release by Dendy (Australia)[3] and CineClick Asia (Worldwide)[4]. Festival reviews by Variety [5], The Advertiser [6] and The Age [7] all point to the film's proud humanist outlook, its successful mix of politics with comedy, predicting for it global success[8].

Rowland also runs the small imprint Cowboy Books which publishes three of his illustrated books; The Existentialist Cowboys Last Stand, Life Advice for High-Plains Drifters, and the award winning Ten Drawings of the Jungle.
