Michael Mates

Michael John Mates (born 9 June 1934) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He is member of Parliament for East Hampshire. He is a Member of the Privy Council.

He was first elected to Parliament in October 1974 general election for Petersfield in Hampshire, and has represented East Hampshire since 1983. He has announced that he will retire at the next general election. His replacement as Conservative Party candidate will be Damian Hinds.

He has been a Chairman of the 1922 committee, and from 1992 to 1993 was Minister of State at the Northern Ireland Office. He resigned after a scandal involving fugitive businessman Asil Nadir. Before entering Parliament he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Queen's Dragoon Guards.

Mates's son, James Mates, is a senior reporter and presenter for ITN.
