Mikko Koivu was selected 6th overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota Wild. He played for TPS Turku in the Finnish SM-liiga before making his NHL debut in the 2005-06 season.
Koivu's scouting reports listed him as a creative and consistent playmaker with soft hands, ideal NHL size and excellent passing skills. His flaws, however, were listed as an awkward, upright skater and lack of scoring touch. Due to these strengths and flaws, Koivu was considered a boom-or-bust prospect and is often predicted to never live up to his older brother Saku's performance as a professional hockey player.
In his first year of professional play in the NHL, Koivu posted 6 goals and 14 assists for 21 points in 64 games, a decent performance by NHL standards. However, in the 2006-2007 NHL season he surpassed his former goal total in only 28 games and is projected to well surpass his former point total by the end of the season.
Koivu is probobly most well known, however, for his excellent ability to score in the overtime shootout. He often uses the same technique which involves skating toward the goal at a sharp angle and utilizing a forehand to backhand deke and finishing with a backhand shot. This technique has been popularly dubbed by fans and commentators as the "forehand-backhand flip."
His older brother Saku Koivu is the team captain of the Montreal Canadiens.
