The Yemen military consists of the army, navy, and air force. About 12% of the country's GDP accounts for defense spending. A major reorganization of the armed forces continues. The unified air forces and air defenses are now under one command. The navy has concentrated in Aden. Total armed forces manning numbers about 65,000, with conscripts accounting for 42,500. The army reserves contain approximately 75,000 members. The Yemen Arab Republic and The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen joined to form the Republic of Yemen on 22 May 1990.

The Yemeni army divides it's 60,000 soldiers into 10 armored brigades, 23 infantry brigades, 5 mech brigades, 2 airborne brigades, 5 militia brigades, 7 artillery brigades, 3 SSM brigades. The supreme leader of the armed forces is Field Marshall, Ali Abdullah Saleh, the President of the Republic of Yemen.
