Milltown Cemetery

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Milltown Cemetery is a cemetery in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is located on the Falls Road, a strongly republican area.

It was the scene of the infamous Milltown Massacre on 16 March 1988, when loyalist paramilitary Michael Stone killed two mourners and a Provisional IRA member. The funeral was that of Dan McCann, Seán Savage and Mairéad Farrell, IRA members killed by the SAS in Gibraltar during Operation Flavius.

The cemetery is synonymous with Irish republicanism. Many of the ten Irish hunger strikers are buried here along with other IRA, INLA and IPLO members, though the vast majority interred in the cemetery are civilians.
