Mischa moved to New York City at the age of four and was naturalised as a citizen of the United States in Los Angeles on February 3, 2006. She has an older sister, Zoe Barton, a London Barrister, and a younger sister, Hania Barton, currently a student in Los Angeles. Barton graduated from the Professional Children's School in Manhattan in 2004, and attended a summer school in Shakespearean acting at RADA in summer 2006.

Barton recently split with her boyfriend Cisco Adler, vocalist of rock band Whitestarr, after naked pictures of him leaked onto the Internet.[1] She also dated oil heir Brandon Davis.

Barton began her acting career at the age of nine in New York Theatre with a lead role in Slavs!, written by Tony Kushner. She took part in many Broadway plays, taking a lead role in James Lapine's Twelve Dreams at Lincoln Center. She made her film debut in Lawn Dogs, which won awards at film festivals around the world. Since then she has appeared in several films, including The Sixth Sense, Notting Hill, and Lost and Delirious, in which she starred. During this early period she was also featured in numerous television commercials and print advertising campaigns. She has been represented then and to the present day by long time friend and mentor Ivan Bart of IMG Models New York.

Barton first appeared on television in 1996, as a younger Lily Montgomery in All My Children. Two years later she starred in the film Pups a modern re-make of Bonnie and Clyde. She played in eight episodes on the television show Once and Again as Katie Singer, Jessie Sammler's (Evan Rachel Wood's) girlfriend.

By August 2003 she had become a household name due to a lead role on the television show The O.C., produced by McG. Barton played Marissa Cooper, a beautiful and popular teenager of Newport Beach, California. The story revolved around her relationships with on/off boyfriend Ryan Atwood, her mother Julie Cooper, and her friends and acquaintances of Newport. Barton's role lasted three seasons.

Following her departure from The O.C., she completed three films awaiting release in 2007. Lord Richard Attenboroughs' Closing the Ring alongside Shirley Maclaine and Brenda Fricker, the Dino de Laurentiis Production Virgin Territory and an independent feature Don't Fade Away. She will next work on the feature films Radio-Active by Ash Baron-Cohen, Walled In to be directed by Sylvain White and Malice in Sunderland.
