Miss Singapore Universe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Miss Singapore Universe is an annual beauty contest held in Singapore to select the country's representative to the Miss Universe pageant. Since 2001, the contest has been organised by the local television station Mediacorp's Channel 5 and Derrol Stepenny Promotions. Prior to 2000, the contest was organised by Metromedia Promotions Pte Ltd who now organises the Miss Singapore World pageant.

Singapore has been sending representatives to Miss Universe contest as early as 1954. The island city-state republic has been represented at Miss Universe every year since 1966. The country has its first semi finalist when Kathie Lee Lee Beng secured a 10th placed position when the pageant was held in St. Louis in 1983. The highest placing ever attained by a Singaporean delegate happened 4 years later in 1987 when Singapore played host to the Miss Universe pageant, where home favourite Marion Nicole Teo was named the 7th runner up.

1991's winner Eileen Yeow went on to sign for Hong Kong's TVB, acting in several TVB dramas since. 1992's winner Cori Teo became Mrs Singapore United Nations in 2002. Miss Singapore Universe 1993 Rena Ramiah won the Miss Tourism International pageant two years after her stint at Miss Universe. 1994's crown holder Paulyn Sun who was acting in Hong Kong since the mid 90s was nominated for Best Actress in the 1998 Hong Kong Film Awards for her role in the Hong Kong film Black Gold. The winner for the year 2000 Eunice Elizabeth Olsen was the youngest Member of Parliament at the age of 27 when she was appointed as one of nine Nominated MPs in November 2004. Jamie Teo who won the coveted title in 2001 enjoys a mildly successful career as an actress and TV presenter in Mediacorp.
