Moldova played their first international on October 10, 1991 against Lithuania. Moldova won the match, 22 points to six. They did not play anymore internationals that year, and played only the single match the following season, against Bulgaria, which Moldova also won, 42 points to three. Moldova next played on March 23 in 1995, when they faced off against Hungary, which they also won, by three points, 17 to 14, to mke it three wins from three matches.
However, their winning ways were halted by Georgia, who defeated them 47 to five two days after their victory over Hungary. This was followed by losses to Ukraie and Latvia, until they won against Bulgaria. All those fixtures were contested in 1996, along with another loss to Latvia in October.
Moldova played twice in 1997, defeating Norway and losing to Croatia. Moldova would not play anymore international rugby until 2000. After the two years of no internationals, Moldova returned in style in 2000, defeating Israel, Bulgaria, Monaco and Malta. The four match streak was brought to and nd by the Netherlands the following year. After mixed results over 2002 and 2003, Moldova started to prepare for 2007 Rugby World Cup European qualifiy.
Moldova were grouped in Pool B of the second round, and they won two of their four matches, which saw them finish second in their pool behind Germany, and thus move onto round three and entere Pool A. Although Moldova performed well, losing just the one match, it was Spain that finished at the top of their pool.
