Mom And Dad Save The World is a 1992 movie which stars Teri Garr, Jeffrey Jones, Jon Lovitz, Kathy Ireland and other actors. Jon Lovitz plays Emperor Tod Spengo who is the emperor of the planet named Spengo. Teri Garr plays Marge Nelson and Jeffrey Jones plays Dick Nelson, her husband.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Emperor Spengo, with General Afir at his side, takes over a small planet at the edge of the galaxy populated entirely by idiots, and renames it after himself. He orders that all the resources of the planet should be engaged to create his "Super Death Ray Laser". The laser's purpose is to destroy Earth, thus making Spengo the greatest planet in the Universe. When Emperor Spengo looks at exactly where his Laser would strike, he sees Marge Nelson exercising -- and falls in love.

Using his Magnoray (a giant magnet), he kidnaps Marge and her husband Dick as they are on their way to a 20th-anniversary weekend. He hopes to make Marge his before he blows up the Earth. Dick and Marge get separated on Spengo, Marge sent to the lap of luxury, waited on by small people with fish or dog heads, while Dick is thrown into a dungeon. In the dungeon, however, Dick meets the rightful king of Spengo, played by Eric Idle, who has plans hidden in his pants and a son -- the White Bird -- out in the desert.

Emperor Spengo quickly finds that his advances towards Marge are failing, so he tries to read Dick's mind in order to discover the secret to her heart. In the meantime, and with the help of Wallace Shawn, Dick manages to break out of the castle into the desert, where he meets the rightful king's son and daughter as well as their followers dressed as 6-foot-tall birds, which are not naturally found on Spengo. The only weapons they have to fight the Emperor are rocks and Light Grenades (see below).

General Afir, who appears to be the only intelligent person on Spengo, has grown tired of the Emperor's waste of the planet's resources and is hatching a plan to stop him. He switches the love serum given to Marge with water. Spengo learns of Afir's plans and ties him up in front of the Laser. Dick, however, sneaks in during the wedding of Spengo and Marge in a giant wood statue of Spengo, reading "In Tod We Trust". Spengo displays the statue to show everyone how unlike him it looks. When the head pops off, the final battle begins.

Inevitably, Dick and Tod have a great swordfight in which neither is particularly skillful. They fight while disengaging the laser in order to save Earth, Afir, and Marge.

After Tod is defeated and the rightful king is reinstated, the king sends Dick and Marge home with the Magnoray. They later bore their daughter and her boyfriend with slides from their "vacation".

It is stated, and often demonstrated, that the people of Spengo are complete idiots. Their technology, therefore, is highly ironic. One example is the Light Grenade. It is a grenade that, once the pin is pulled, will vaporize anyone who picks it up. People do pick it up, however, because it is printed with the words, "Pick Me Up".

The technology and physics involved in creating such a device would require a great deal of intelligence, but it would be effective only when used by idiots.
