Monterey is a town in Highland County, Virginia, United States. The population was 158 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Highland CountyGR6.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²), all land.


The town of Monterey is heavily dependent on agriculture and niche tourism, generated from its many events and shops catering to tourists visiting for the tranquility and mountain air. The biggest fesival is the Highland County Maple Festival, held on the second and third weekends of March, which brings roughly 50,000 visitors to the area.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 158 people, 90 households, and 44 families residing in the town. The population density was 196.8/km² (512.2/mi²). There were 141 housing units at an average density of 175.6/km² (457.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.47% White, 1.27% Native American, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.27% of the population.

There were 90 households out of which 16.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.6% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 51.1% were non-families. 48.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.76 and the average family size was 2.48.

In the town the population was spread out with 14.6% under the age of 18, 1.3% from 18 to 24, 17.1% from 25 to 44, 36.1% from 45 to 64, and 31.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 53 years. For every 100 females there were 69.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 64.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $36,786, and the median income for a family was $45,625. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $16,625 for females. The per capita income for the town was $26,379. None of the families and 3.5% of the population were living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and 4.9% of those over 64.
