Morgantown High School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Morgantown High School is a high school located in Morgantown, West Virginia. It opened in 1927 and is located in South Park, on Wilson Avenue. It is the home of the Mohigans, the name of a non-existent Native American tribe whose name is a combination of the words Morgantown (MO) High (HIG) Annual (AN), which was the school's yearbook. The Native American mascot and logo were adopted because of the close relation to the name Mohican, a real Native American tribe.[1] As of 2006, it has an enrollment of 1,733 students.

Among the school's student activities are the Red and Blue Marching Band, the show choir, and over 20 varsity sports. Morgantown High's football team has won the WV AAA state championship in 1983, 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2005. The girl's cross country team has won three state championships in a row. The principal as of 2006 is Mr. Desantis; assistant principals are Mr. Lewis, Mrs. Hicks, and Mrs. Goodwin.

The cable television network MTV announced in October 2006 that it would tape an eight-episode reality TV series, Show Choir, following the school's show choir, which performs songs in four-part harmony, with costumes and choreography, on a competitive circuit. The show has a tentative premiere date set for some time in Spring 2007. [2]
