Movies You Should See (abbreviated MYSS) is a weekly podcast produced by the podcast network Simply Syndicated. The show is usually released on Saturdays and features one film each week. The five co-hosts are Richard Smith, Tristan Ofield, Mike Dawson, Craig Bevan and Allison Downing. Each week the hosts review a film that they think is a 'Movie You Should See'. Their choices are diverse, ranging from Amelie to Amores Perros, from Ghostbusters to The Goonies.

Unlike many other podcasts, MYSS is highly unstructured and all five presenters regularly disagree with each other. They often roam onto topics that are totally unrelated to the film supposedly being reviewed, as well as discussing other works of people who worked on the film, and other dubiously linked topics. This often results in random anecdotes and fits of laughter all round. However, to fans of the show, this is half the fun and contributes greatly to its popularity and growing cult following.

During March of 2005, Richard Smith and Tristan Ofield of Anonymous Room Productions began experimenting with podcasting as a means of promoting various feature length and short films for the independent film company, Anonymous Room Productions, by releasing a series of features covering their new film releases. Realising that podcasting was a new media which was capable of much more, they began Movies You Should See in August 2005 with two other co-hosts, Mike Dawson and Craig Bevan, friends from Bretton Hall University, and whom they now worked with, as part of Anonymous Room Productions.

The show was originally recorded in Leeds, and did not feature Allison Downing. Allison is the partner of Richard Smith and became part of the regular cast of the show in September 2005 after she and Richard began living together and recording of the show moved to Haworth, West Yorkshire.

The success of Movies You Should See, lead to the creation of other podcasts, and the establishment of a separate podcasting company and network, Simply Syndicated.[1]

  • Episode 25: Event Horizon - This episode is famous for the introduction of the popular in-joke of "night arrows", a particularly ridiculous element from the film Timeline.
  • Episode 36: Things We Hate - A Movies You Should See Special - This special episode featured the introduction of the "grumpy alter-egos" of the four of the co-hosts, namely, Bitch-ard Smith, Rage Bevan, Allison Frowning, and the now infamous Mike Crawson. These names make returning appearances when the hosts are unhappy about the choice of film being reviewed. Co-host Tristan Ofield was not part of that episode, and is frequently teased for his lack of alter-ego.
  • Episode 49: Movies You Should See 1st Birthday Special - The only episode to be made available in video format.
  • Episode 102: Movies You Should See 2nd Birthday Special - This episode is famous for having no topic. It was one long tangent as requested by fans.

Movies You Should See is also notable for its large volume of in-jokes, something which may confuse the new listener. These include:

  • Repeated references to the actor Clancy Brown (often shouted loudly). This was begun by guest host Will Tristram (see guests) in the episode reviewing The Shawshank Redemption
  • Night Arrows, a particularly ridiculous element of the film TimeLine. "Night" arrows are arrows that are not lit on fire. Various jokes are made about "night objects", referring to objects not lit on fire. A Movies You Should See T-Shirt featured the line "Prepare the Night Arrows' [2]

The show receives a constant 4.5 star rating in the iTunes Store.

The show was featured in a Radio Times review of podcasts[4]. The review said:

In this weekly film review, a group of guys and a gal have a warm, funny and sometimes sweary chat about a film you should see. They work in the film business, but aren't journalists or famous, so the reviews are well informed but not clichéd or "media friendly".

Also, MYSS was recommended on Episode 23 of Adam Curry's Podfinder. An invitation to join PodShow was turned down by the hosts of the show.

The success of Movies You Should See has lead to the creation of the other shows:

  • Weekend Watches: A weekly podcast[5][6] presented by Smith and Downing, with episodes currently released every Thursday. The show is something of a spin-off from the original Movies You Should See podcast, covering mainly film and television recommendations for the forthcoming weekend.
  • Make It So: Hosted by Smith and Dawson in which they discuss aspects of the popular TV series and films Star Trek.[7][8] The show is unstructured and takes an episode's discussion topic usually grabbed from the shows' forum[9] at the last minute. Make It So is released every Monday.
  • ...Or Do You Think That's Just Bo!!*#ks?: Released on Tuesdays, hosted by Richard Smith in which he talks about various aspects of the news and popular culture that he finds annoying. [10][11] From June 28, 2007 - August 25, 2007 the show was on hiatus, as the question of whether or not to continue the podcast was being debated. Upon the new show's release, it had undergone a significant reformatting. The show is now more structured with one central rant for each show.
  • The Definitive Word: Hosted by Will Tristram, the show discusses awide rage of subjects to do with modern society and culture.[12].
  • Albums You Should Hear: [13] Similar to Movies You Should See, except about music albums. The show is hosted by Colin Cunningham, Allison Downing and Michael Storer.
  • Men of the House: A comedic short podcast staring Craig Bevan and Mike Dawson, airring twice a weekly.[14]. Typical episodes are under 4 minutes, and cover the trivial conversations between Craig and Mike, both playing exaggerated versions of themselves. The show ended it's first season on 23 November, 2007.
  • Left Field Cinema: Another spin off from Movies You Should See, the show covers more left wing films, new releases and anaylsis of film makers and films. The show is hosted by Mike Dawson and is the first scripted podcast from Simply Syndicated [15].
  • Games You Should Play: Following the same format as Movies You Should See and Albums You Should Hear, this show covers computer games and is hosted by John (who didn't know the hosts of MYSS before listening to the show). Each show covers a classic computer game.[16]
