MySpaceIM is the official instant messaging client for the social networking site, MySpace. As of March 15, 2007, the IM client is in beta.

Contents

MySpaceIM integrates several features into the IM. Currently these are the features included:

  • Basic instant messaging to other MySpace users.
  • Shortcuts to MySpace.com features and profiles.
  • Imports friends from MySpace into your contacts list in MySpaceIM.
  • Instant alerts for all requests, messages, and comments.
  • Integrated music player, which plays your friends' profile songs.
  • Switchable conversation views, such as: traditional IM, with pictures, or with cartoon-like balloons.
  • Skinnable interface.
  • Shareable custom backgrounds in message windows.
  • Built-in avatar picture cropping.

MySpaceIM has been rumored to be based on the MSN Messenger protocol, but it has been pointed out that it simply shares the same port with MSN, not any of its protocol. (The common misconception can likely be attributed to the usage of protocol analyzers, such as Wireshark, which match protocols based off ports.)

However, the latest release appears to use HTTP to connect to the MySpace server.[citation needed]

There has been interest in developing a Gaim MySpaceIM plugin for the Gaim's Google Summer of Code. However, no working third-party MySpaceIM client is currently available.
