IMDb profile

My Stepmother Is An Alien is a 1988 comedy science fiction film directed by Richard Benjamin. It stars Kim Basinger as Celeste, an alien sent on a secret mission to Earth. Dan Akyroyd plays a widowered scientist who is working on experimental ways to send radio waves into deep space. An accident during one of his experiments inadvertantly caused gravity to be ruined on Celeste's homeworld. Celeste is then sent to Earth to find out who has discovered a way to do this and how they accomplished it. She is aided by an alien or alien device resembling a gigantic eye who hides herself in a designer purse to aid Celeste by indoctrinating her on Earth ways and is able to do amazing things like create diamonds almost instantly and designer dresses instantly. This leads to some humorous situations where Celeste nearly exposes herself as alien due to her strange behavior, like trying to kiss someone for the first time or trying to cook. Alyson Hannigan is the daughter who realizes Celeste's strange habits, such as snacking on cigarette butts and flashlight batteries, and handling an extremely hot oven rack without being burned. However, she cannot convince her father that there is something strange about her. Her father is too smitten with Celeste to care. The film also features Jon Lovitz, Ann Prentiss and Seth Green. Celeste experiences many things on Earth that she would otherwise have never gotten to experience, such as sneezing, sexual intercourse, and love. In the end Celeste falls in love with the scientist played by Dan Akyroyd and comes to understand and care for his daughter. Celeste attempts to convince her homeworld that the whole thing was an accident and that Earth shouldn't be destroyed because of all of the wonderful things it offers.
