NScripter

NScripter is an engine for the creation of visual novels, written by Naoki Takahashi. Due to its simplicity and its liberal license (while it is not open source, royalty-free commercial use is permitted), it quickly became popular in Japan, and was used for a number of high-profile commercial and dōjin titles, such as HaniHani and Tsukihime.

Since the original NScripter is only available for Microsoft Windows, a number of clones have been written, of which the best-known is the free software implementation ONScripter: this is based on the SDL library, and can thus be used to play NScripter games on a number of other platforms, from Mac OS X and Linux through to handhelds such as the PlayStation Portable.

ONScripter has also been modified to support English text, and as such has been used in a number of translations, such as the English version of Narcissu and Tsukihime.
