Nakano, Nagano

Nakano (中野市 Nakano-shi?) is a city located in Nagano, Japan, located in the northern portion of the prefecture.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 42,526 and the density of 550.00 persons per km². The total area is 77.32 km².

The city was founded on July 1, 1954.

The city of Nakano is supported largely by its vast agricultural industry. Nakano boasts some of the highest quality of fruits and vegetables, including Fuji apples ("ringo"), Kyohō grapes ("kyohō budō"), peaches ("momo"), "nashi" (asian pears), rice ("kome"), asparagus, and mushrooms.

Perhaps one of the first Americans to live in Nakano was Tim Cole, his wife Katie Cole, and his children, Levi E. Cole, Silas J. Cole, Emma R. Cole, Amos J. Cole, and Caroline E. Cole, who moved to Nakano in 1988 to start the city's first Protestant Christian church, Nakano Christ Church. Tim Cole and his family lived and pastored the church in Nakano until 2002, at which time they moved to Tokyo.
