Namibian Broadcasting Corporation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation is the public broadcaster of Namibia.
It was established in 1990, replacing the South West African Broadcasting Corporation. Until 1979, South Africa's state broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) operated radio services in Namibia, then known as South West Africa. The SWABC's television service was introduced in 1981, comprising a mix of SABC programming (pre-recorded on cassettes) and local programming.
NBC broadcasts a single television channel (still the only local channel) and a 24 hour national radio station, both entirely in English. Additionally it provides a further 8 radio stations that broadcast for 10 hours per day in other languages, including Afrikaans and German. It is funded from a combination of state grants, television licence fees, and advertising.
