Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) is a junior college that is part of education in Singapore, offering a two-year course for pre-university students leading up to GCE 'A' Level examinations.

NYJC was founded in 1978, and was among the first junior colleges to be established in Singapore.

The name "Nanyang" is the hanyu pinyin for the Chinese characters "South Sea", which was what the Chinese in China called Singapore, Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region in the past. The name reflects the origins of Singapore having been built by immigrants not only from China, but also from India, Malaysia and all the various parts of the world. The badge of NYJC has a picture of a Merlion on a red background above a sea, and its motto is "Together We Build".

Contents

Nanyang Junior College is one of the most accessible Junior Colleges in Singapore. It is close to Central region of Singapore and it just lies on the outskirts of the congested Central Expressway. Moreover, it is well-served by a large number of bus services. Another welcome fact is that once the Circle Line is ready in 2010, the school will be served by Lorong Chuan MRT Station, which is in fact, just beside the fences of the school.

The bus services that serves Nanyang JC are as follows:

The 5-digit bus-stop number could be found on top of the signage of that particular bus-stop. The suffix -x denotes that the number could be either 1 or 9, depending on the direction of the flow of traffic.

An example of a bus stop here. The bus-stop number in this case is 02151... And yes, Route 133 brings you from NYJC to the city.

They are also known as unofficial CCAs, and hence, they are still encouraged to join a CCA group as above. The original college anthem piece was in English, and was composed by M. Cheng (lyrics) and L. Fang (melody). The official translation in Chinese was done by Leow Wee Seong, yet it has never been used in assemblies and functions. Recent changes to the song include the removal of the third verse in 2001, shown in light blue.

Official English Version
Together We Build
First stanza

Like the rising fountain,
Our ardent hopes reach to the sky.
But the fountain stands alone,
Though not you and I.

Chorus

For together we plan,
Together we build,
A firm foundation is our stand.
United our course,
Forward we march,
Our College's name proclaim!

Second stanza

Like the graceful palm tree,
We stand together strong and free.
Yet the palm tree stands alone,
A lonely sight to see.

Chorus
Third stanza

Like the ever burning flame,
Our youthful hearts with fervour glow.
Yet the bright flame burns alone,
That's not the right we know.

Chorus

In 2006, the school management committee viewed that the school anthem is in need of a refreshment. Numerous entries to the modification to the school anthem were suggested. However, in January 2007, they had decided to stick to the current anthem, but with a change of tunes to keep up with the times.
