The Naoki Prize was created in 1935 in memory of Japanese novelist Naoki Sanjugo. Kikuchi Kan, then editor of Bungei Shunju magazine, began it in order to recognize the best popular literature written by any young author. The winner receives a watch and one million yen. It is sponsored by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Literature (Nihon Bungaku Shino Kai).
