The Nashville Sounds are a minor league baseball team of the Pacific Coast League. The team is located in Nashville, Tennessee and plays at Herschel Greer Stadium. Opened in 1978, the park holds 10,700 fans. The club joined the PCL during its amalgamation of the American Association in 1998. They are the AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The name "Sounds" refers to the Country music recording industry of Nashville.
The Sounds won the PCL Championship in 2005, sweeping the Tacoma Rainiers in three games in the final series. Previous league titles won by the team are the Southern League title in 1979, as the AA affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, and again in 1982, as the AA affiliate of the New York Yankees.
The Sounds plan on leaving Greer Stadium for a new ballpark in 2009. After years of the Sounds lobbying for a new park and threatening to leave town (either for the suburbs or a new location altogether), the Nashville Metro Council approved the new stadium on February 7, 2006. First Tennessee Field is planned for construction on the west bank of the Cumberland River in downtown Nashville, just two miles north of the current stadium. As of March 28, 2007, construction has yet to begin pending finalization of design work and financing.[1]
