National Book Foundation

The National Book Foundation, founded 1988, is a non-profit American literary foundation established "to raise the cultural appreciation of great writing in America."[1] It achieves this through two ways.[1] The first is sponsoring the nation's preeminent literary prize the National Book Awards, including the medal of Distinguished Contribution to American Letters and the Literarian Award. The second is by outreach programs featuring National Book Award authors in which communities participate by reading and writing together.

The NBF board of trustees is composed of representatives from American literary institutions, for example in 2006 the board included the President of Penguin Press, the President of the New York Public Library and others.[2]
