National Fatherhood Initiative

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Fatherhood Initiative is US-based non-profit, non-partisan organization that aims to improve the well-being of children through the promotion of Responsible Fatherhood. National Fatherhood Initiative's website is www.fatherhood.org.

The mission of National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) is to improve the well-being of children by increasing the proportion of children with involved, responsible, and committed fathers. NFI accomplishes this mission through a "three-e" strategy of:

  • Educating and inspiring all Americans, especially fathers, through public awareness campaigns, research, and other resources.
  • Equipping fathers and developing leaders of national, state, and community fatherhood initiatives through curricula, training, and technical assistance.
  • Engaging every sector of society through strategic alliances and partnerships.

Launched on 7th March, 1994 by Don Eberly, a former White House advisor and civil society scholar and Wade F. Horn, a child psychologist, it states as its founding principles:

  • Fathers make unique and irreplaceable contributions to the lives of children
  • Father absence produces negative outcomes for their children
  • Societies which fail to reinforce a cultural ideal of responsible fatherhood get increasing amounts of father absence
  • Widespread fatherlessness is the most socially consequential problem of our time.
