The National Film Awards is the most prestigious and one of India's oldest award ceremonies. It began in 1954 and is currently run by the Directorate of Film Festivals [1]which was established in 1973. [2]

Each year a national panel selects the winning entry, and the award ceremony is held at New Delhi, where the President of India gives away the awards, followed by the inauguration of the National Film Festival, where all the award-winning films are screened for the public.

This award is given to the Best Feature film on National Integration

This award is given to the film judged Best First Film of a Director at the National Film Awards

This award is for lifetime achievement and contribution to Indian Cinema. It is named after Dadasaheb Phalke, one of India's pioneering film makers.

A special award for Best Film was given to the Malayalam film Uttarayanam, directed by G. Aravindan in 1975, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of India's Independence.
