The municipality is divided on three islands (Tomma,Hugla and Handnesøya) and one peninsula that bears the name of the municipality. The Coastal Express arrives two times a day, the Northbound arrives 05:30 and the Southbound 11:15. Nesna peninsula is also home to Nordlands education center Nesna University College, and there is also an high school KVN High School.

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Nesna(Norse Nesnar), since the first church was built there. The name is derived from the word nes n 'headland'.

The coat-of-arms is from 1989, and shows a conventionalized headland (Norwegian nes - see above under the information of the name).
