Prior to the creation of New Jersey Transit, public transportation in New Jersey was the responsibility of the Public Service Coordinated Transport Company, which was originally the Public Service Railway division of the Public Service Corporation of New Jersey until it was spun off when PSNJ was divided into two entities in 1948: Public Service Electric and Gas Company, and PSCT. PSCT provided service throughout New Jersey, originally using trolleys and then transitioning to Trolley Cars, Trolley Buses, and Motor Busses. During the 1970s, the New Jersey Department of Transportation began subsidizing the routes of Public Service, now renamed Transport of New Jersey (TNJ), contracting with TNJ and other companies to operate local bus service throughout New Jersey.[1]
New Jersey Transit came into being as the result of the New Jersey Public Transportation Act of 1979 to acquire, operate, and contract for transportation services in the public interest. New Jersey Transit Bus Operations, Inc. came into being the following year, when it acquired Transport of New Jersey. Other purchases and buyouts in the 1980s expanded the bus division of NJ Transit, including the acquisition of the Atlantic City Transportation Company in the early 1980s. The current version of NJ Transit Bus Operations, Inc. came into being in 1992, when NJ Transit Mercer, Inc., which was the successor to the former "Mercer Metro" operation in the Trenton and Princeton areas, was folded into NJ Transit Bus Operations [2].
Today, New Jersey Transit Bus Operations owns, leases, or subleases 2982 buses (as of June 2005) [3]
Routes are numbered by where they operate in the state of New Jersey. A full description of exact fare and full service is given in the Fares section. Fare and route can also be further elucidated on the individual route schedules[4] or the trip planner.[5]

New Jersey Transit Bus Operations operates a variety of equipment throughout the state. The predominant equipment is the MCI D4000/D4500, which (including units leased to private carriers) comprises half of the total fleet (approximately 1500 buses). MCI D series cruisers are used throughout New Jersey in local and express short-haul and long-haul service.[6]
From 1980 until 1995, New Jersey Transit was a Flxible customer, with transit bus orders being procured exclusively through Flxible until it went out of business in 1995. Since then, New Jersey Transit has ordered prmiarily RTS buses for transit service, with 85 articulated coaches also on the roster used on routes between eastern Bergen County and New York City, and on some routes from downtown Newark (the picture beginning this article is such an example).[6]
New Jersey Transit Bus Operations is divided into the Northern and Southern Divisions. [7] Below is a list of all facilities and the buses housed in them.[8]
New Jersey Transit's northern division consists of 11 garages owned and operated by New Jersey Transit, and numerous contractors providing service under contract to New Jersey Transit or leasing buses from New Jersey Transit for their own routes. Detailed route assignments and ADA accessibility are given below. (NOTE: The Port Authority Bus Terminal and the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal are not fully accessible for 100- and 300-series routes.)
