New Theatres, Calcutta was formed by B. N. Sircar (Birendranath Sircar, the recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award of 1970). It was formed on February 10, 1931. The first Bengali talkie, Dena Paona, was released in 1931, directed by Premankur Atarthi and produced by New Theatres. Famous musician Raichand Boral composed for this movie.

In 1935, P.C. Barua directed and acted in Saratchandra Chatterjee's novel Devdas, with K.L. Saigal playing the title role, and this film became a phenomenon in the industry. Bimal Roy directed the Hindi version in 1955. Kanan Devi was the first popular star actress. Also there was a group of talented actors like Chhabi Biswas, Bikash Roy, Pahari Sanyal, Basanta Choudhury.

The Famous musicians who worked there include R. C. Boral, Pankaj Mullick and Timir Baran.
