New York Theatre Workshop

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

New York Theatre Workshop is an 188 seat off-Broadway theatre noted for its acclaimed and innovative productions of new works.

It is a workshop where artists create new work, hone their craft and collaboratively explore theatre as well as staging productions. With an average of four to six readings and related workshop events each week (not to mention summer residencies, artistic fellowships and other developmental activities), much of the work and many of the artists seen on stages throughout the city, across the country and around the world can trace their way back to NYTW.

Some of the theatre's progeny (like Rent and Dirty Blonde) have found a home in the commercial sector, the theatre has also hosted smaller scale works such as that by Flemish director Ivo van Hove, Tony Kushner's epic ensemble piece Homebody/Kabul, and the off-Broadway debut of writer/performer Alexander Thomas in his solo work Throw Pitchfork.

On January 11, 2006, Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a surprise announcement donated several city-owned buildings to arts organizations, including New York Theatre Workshop, on East Fourth Street, designating the block Fourth Arts Block.
