Football New Zealand is the governing body for the sport of football (soccer) in New Zealand. It was founded in 1891, and became officially affiliated with FIFA in 1948. New Zealand was a founding member of the Oceania Football Confederation.
FNZ oversees the seven New Zealand Soccer Federations, as well as the New Zealand national soccer team (nicknamed the "All Whites"), the national junior and women's teams (nicknames the "SWANZ"), the men's and women's National League (the men's league is known as the New Zealand Football Championship (NZFC)), and a number of tournaments, including the Chatham Cup. The New Zealand Football league is played in the New Zealand summer between eight teams. A New Zealand team, The Wellington Phoenix FC, also play in the Australia A-League, also played in the summer.
The board recently decided to re-brand the organisation[1]. The leading candidate for the new name is Football New Zealand. The rebranding is an attempt to bring New Zealand into line with the international game where soccer is rarely used in official names (see Football (word)).
