Nexstar Broadcasting Group
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc., is an entity of broadcast television stations headquartered in Irving, Texas. The company consists of 47 television stations across the U.S., ranging from market sizes 9(a) (Washington, D.C. sub-market) to 201 (St. Joseph, Missouri). 43 of the stations are broadcasting at full power, with the other 4 broadcasting at low power. The company is publicly traded under NXST on the NASDAQ.
These stations are either owned and operated by Nexstar (some under the Mission Broadcasting brand), or controlled by Nexstar under a LMA with either Sinclair Broadcast Group or Clear Channel, the latter for the time being, as Clear Channel searches for new buyers for all of its television stations (to the private equity group Providence Equity Partners) and some of its radio stations. Most of the stations Nexstar owns and operates were acquired through the acquisition of Quorum Broadcasting in 2003. Many of these stations are licensed under the Mission Broadcasting brand, operated under Local Service Agreements with Nexstar to comply with current FCC ownership limits.[1] Many viewers of Nexstar owned or operated stations have complained that these stations have lagged far behind other stations in those markets in beginning high definition broadcasting.
- 1WHAG serves as a sub-market station to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
- 2Nexstar owns the station's license but management capabilities belong to Clear Channel through another station, CBS affiliate WHP-TV, Clear Channel operates the station under a Local Marekting Agreement for the time being as all of its television stations are in the process of being sold to Providence Equity Partners. Clear Channel also made it clear that Nexstar would eventually take outright control of the station once the sales are complete.
- 3A sale of KFTA to Mission Broadcasting is pending; Nexstar will continue to operate the station after the sale.
