Hoult was born in Wokingham, Berkshire and trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London. He made his film début as Bobby in the Boxer Films/Fox Searchlight picture Intimate Relations. Although About A Boy marked his first leading role in a feature film, he has worked since the age of eight in film, television and theatre. He currently attends Ranelagh sixth form in Bracknell, Berkshire. Nicholas cites Stagger Lee amongst the influences on the way he portrays Tony in Skins, after an encounter on a train.
He is rumored to star on an as-yet untitled horror film directed by Takashi Shimizu costarring Montanna Thompson and Eddie Madison, Marie Cruz and Cruz's rumored boyfriend Ste Judd[citation needed].
