Noatak River

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Noatak River is a river in northwestern Alaska. The river begins in the Brooks Range Gates of the Arctic National Park at about {{coor dm|67|28|N|154|50|W|about 640 km (400 miles) to the Chukchi Sea at Kotzebue Sound. The river is a small distance north of the Arctic Circle.

The Noatak National Preserve is along the shores of the river.

The only permanent settlement along the Noatak River is the village of Noatak, which is located at mile 375. It has an airstrip for small planes, post office and a school. There are a few cabins along the river, marking seasonal air strips and river junctions.

The Noatak, which translates into something close to "The Great Empty," is fed by a relatively large watershed hence its waters in a storm can rise four feet in one hour. It is otherwise glacially fed at its headwaters.
