During the Samhan period, Nonsan is believed to have been part of Mahan territory. In the Baekje period, the district belonged to Whangdeungyasan-gun which included Yoeryasan-hyeon and Jinaksan-hyeon and Deokgeun-gun which included Gajinae-hyeon. Later in the Silla period, it was divided into two different towns with the new names; Deogeun and Hwangsan. Also, Yoeryasan ["san" meaning mountain], Jinaksan, and Gajinae were renamed Nisan, Seoksan, and Sijin, respectively.

In the Goryeo period, the following cities were renamed: Hwangsan to Yeonsan; Deogeun to the same name but different meaning; Seoksanhyeon to Soeksoenghyeon. Sijin-hyeon merged into Deogeun gun in the 6th year of the King Taejo in Joseon Period. And, Deogeun-gun was renamed as Eunjin-hyeon in the first year of the King Sejong. In the 13th year of the King Teajong, Yeonsan-gun was changed to Yeonsan-hyeon. Nisan-hyeon was renamed Niseong-hyeon in the King Youngjo Period. And, Seokseong-hyeon was renamed Noseong-hyeon in the King Jeongjo Period. In 1912, four hyeons were changed to four guns.

The modern entity of Nonsan was established by combining four small towns(-gun), Yeonsan, Eunjin, Noseong, Seoksung, in 1914.

Do-ol in a talk at Konyang University in 2005 called Nonsan the font of Korean Confucianism.

Nonsan City has jurisdiction over 2 eups, 11 myeons, and 2 dongs.

Nonsan is served by the national railroad system and city, regional and national bus lines. An expressway connects the city to Daejeon and other cities. All city streets are paved, many of them with bike paths and most with sidewalks along side them. There is no airport, and the small river running through the city proper is not used for commerce, but downstream it joins a river, and an outlying subdivision of the city serves as a significant fishing port.

Nonsan is an agrarian city, with rice far and away the most important crop. Other important crops include strawberries, ginseng, and Korean pear. According to The Chosun Ilbo[2](in Japanese),the farmers are growing new varieties of strawberry produced in Japan without the producer's permission. Sesil [pronounced "say -shill"] company is the world's third leading producer of insects for natural pest control.

The greater Nonsan area includes the national amry training center.

Konyang University, founded 1991, has its main campus in Nonsan. It has a university hospital with educational programs for nurses and doctors in Daejeon.

Hanmin University is in Yeonsan, one of Nonsan's constituent towns (-gun).

Geumgang University, a recently founded Buddhist university, is in rural Nonsan, near Gyeryong Mountain.

Local attractions include the Eunjin Mireuk, a Buddhist sculpture of the Goryeo period, as well as the Baekje Military Museum.
