The North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (Welsh: Athrofa Addysg Uwch Gogledd Ddwyrain Cymru, commonly: NEWI, officially University of Wales, North East Wales Institute of Higher Education) is a higher education institution based in Wrexham. NEWI was formed in 1975 by the merger of Denbighshire Technical College, Cartrefle Teacher Training College and Kelsterton College in Deeside. Initially, its degrees were validated by the University of Salford.

In 1993, NEWI became an associate member of the University of Wales and delivered University of Wales validated degrees. In 2004, NEWI became a full member of the University. As of 2006 NEWI is accredited by the University of Wales and has devolved powers to validate and deliver its own University of Wales degrees. It is considered that by 2010, NEWI will become established as the University of Wales, Wrexham, as it is believed this will provide the institute with enhanced international recognition.^{[citation needed]}

NEWI offers a broad variety of qualifications and often caters to specific fields of study. In addition to professional courses such as Initial Teacher Training and Nursing, NEWI offers a range of postgraduate and undergraduate qualifications in Art & Design, Engineering, Science, Humanities and Business. Although the university is based in Wales, which is bi-langual, all courses are held in English.

NEWI is active in postgraduate research particularly in the field of Science but also in Engineering, Health, Business, and the Arts.

Although the university is based in Wales a lot of the students, especially those in the final year, come from other countries. It is not uncommon in the Computing & Information year three courses that the majority of students are not from the UK.
