Northern Kurmanji

Northern Kurmanji (Kurdish: Kurmancî ya Bakûr also simply referred to as Kurmancî) is the most commonly-spoken dialect of the Kurdish language spoken in Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, the former Soviet republics and by Kurds living in Central Asia. It is spoken by the vast majority of Kurdish speakers. It is the only dialect spoken in all four parts of Kurdistan.

The major sub-dialects of Northern Kurmanji include:

  • Serhati
  • Botani

Serhati and Botani are used to identify variations of the Northern Kurmanji dialect. In Southern Kurdistan, the term Northern Kurmanji is rarely used, and instead natives of the region often refer to the dialect as, Bahdînî. The name, Bahdînî (sometimes pronounced Badînî), is derived from the name of the region in Southern Kurdistan, Bahdînan, which Northern Kurmanji is primarily spoken.
