"O Holy Night" ("Cantique de Noël") is a well-known Christmas carol composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to the French poem "Minuit, chrétiens" by Placide Cappeau (1808-1877), a wine merchant and poet. Cappeau was asked to write a Christmas poem by a parish priest. It has become a standard modern carol for solo performance with an operatic finish.

Contents

In the carol, the singer recalls the birth of Jesus. It was translated into English by Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight, editor of Dwight's Journal of Music in 1855, and lyrics also exist in other languages.

On 24 December 1906, Reginald Fessenden, a Canadian inventor, broadcast the first AM radio program, which included him playing "O Holy Night" on the violin. The carol therefore appears to have been the first piece of music to be broadcast on radio.

Known for its difficulty, the carol has been recorded by various artists, including:

"O Holy Night" was sung, badly, by lead character Eric Cartman on a Christmas-themed episode of the animated series South Park. The sequence became so popular among fans that this recording is often played on radio stations during the Christmas season. In a separate promotional spot for the show, Cartman attempts to sing the carol but keeps forgetting the words, whereupon he is repeatedly shocked with an electric cattle prod wielded by Kyle Broflovski.

"O Holy Night" was featured on The West Wing at the end of the Season Four episode "Holy Night", sung by the Yale close harmony group the Whiffenpoofs. It also was played in another Aaron Sorkin-scripted drama, in the episode “The Christmas Show” of the TV series "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip". It featured musicians benefiting from The Tipitina's Foundation.

Robert Guillaume sang "O Holy Night" on an episode of the TV series "Benson."

"O Holy Night" was sung by Mariah Carey as well for her 1994 holiday album Merry Christmas. The track was also released as a promo single.

"O Holy Night" was also sung on Monk, in season 4 : "Mr. Monk and the Secret Santa". Captain Stottlemeyer plays the guitar and sings, while Randy later accompanies him with a great harmony.

"O Holy Night" was also featured on an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air at the closing of the show.

Jessica Simpson featured her rendition on the album Rejoyce: The Christmas Album as well as performing the song as a duet live with Brian McKnight for her holiday TV special on ABC.

Each year since 1948, the Rich's Great Tree in Atlanta has had its grand illumination on the highest note of the song. (This is the second and last syllable of the next-to-last "divine" near the end of the song, the first chorus being repeated the second and third times as well.) The ceremony is aired on TV in the region.

"O Holy Night is also common on talent shows in the UK, For instance Michelle McManus sang the song in the second series of Pop Idol and G4 and Rhydian Roberts both attempted the song in their respective finals of the X Factor

O Holy Night - Version 1:

Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angels' voices!
Oh night divine, Oh night when Christ was born;
Oh night divine, Oh night, Oh night Divine.
Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here come the wise men from Orient land.
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friend.
He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King, Behold your King.
Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother;
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! O praise His Name forever,
His power and glory evermore proclaim.
His power and glory evermore proclaim.

O Holy Night - Version 2:

O! Holy night! The stars, their gleams prolonging,
Watch o'er the Eve of our dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error, longing
For His appearance, then the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope; the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was Born;
O night, O holy night, O night divine!
Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts we stand by the Babe adored.
O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
And come now, Shepherds, from your flocks unboard.
The Son of God lay thus w'thin lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our Lord.
He knows our need, our weakness never lasting,
Behold your King! By Him, let Earth accord!
Behold your King! By Him, let Earth accord!
Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Long live His truth, and may it last forever,
For in His name all discordant noise shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

(The second and third choruses are often replaced with a refrain of the first).

Peuple debout! Chante ta délivrance,
Noël, Noël, chantons le Rédempteur,
Noël, Noël, chantons le Rédempteur!

English Translation of Minuits, chrétiens / Cantique de Noël: (N.b. the English version of 'O Holy Night' is not a direct translation of the French.)

Midnight, Christians is the solemn hour
When God as Man descended unto us
To erase the original stain (sin)
And end the wrath of his Father.
The entire world trembles with expectation
In this night that gives to us a Savior.
Fall on your knees, await your deliverance.
Noel, Noel, here is the Redeemer,
Noel, Noel, here is the Redeemer!
The redeemer has broken every shackle
The earth is free, and heaven is open.
He sees a brother where there was once only a slave
Those who had been chained together by iron, love now unites.
Who will tell Him of our gratitude
It is for every one of us that he was born, suffered and died.
Stand on your feet, sing of your deliverance.
Noel, Noel, sing of the Redeemer,
Noel, Noel, sing of the Redeemer!
