Obese Records was created in 1995 as a small record store in Prahran, Melbourne, specialising in Australian Hip-Hop, which at the time was a mainly underground music scene. In mid 2002 the store was bought by MC Pegz (Tirren Staaf) and rapidly transformed into an Australian Hip-Hop record label. Pegz, a long-time Melbourne based artist, pushed the distribution side of the business and has since created an ever growing distribution network across the country, and expanding overseas. Pegz also purchased Zenith Records, the only vinyl pressing plant in the Southern Hemisphere and used this business to assist in the production of Australian Hip-Hop artists.

Also in 2003, the Obese artists, Hilltop Hoods released their album The Calling which became the first Australian Hip Hop album to reach platinum album status. This helped put Obese Records on the map as a powerful force in the Australian music scene. Whilst most major record labels are skeptical of the commercial viability of Australian Hip-Hop, Obese Records success has proven that audiences can appreciate local music that does not necessarily copy the North American style of Hip-Hop which dominated the early days of the Australian hip-hop music scene. Bias B the music artist frequents there with his friends Igor Dosen and Toli Papadopoulos. The trio spray regularly and are still writting, with several throw ups, pieces, and tags through out melbourne. Raise is still getting up and is predicted to be the next major graffiti artist.

The following artists are currently signed to Obese Records:

  • Culture of Kings Volume 1
  • Culture of Kings Volume 2
  • Culture of Kings Volume 3
  • Obesecity
