Off-sale

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Off-sale or off-licence refers to the sale of an alcoholic beverage intended for consumption away from the establishment. This is opposed to on-sale or on-licence where alcoholic beverages are consumed on-site, as in pubs, bars and restaurants. Many on-licenced premises also permit off-sales. In North America off-sale establishments often have more restrictive hours than on-sale sites do, typically closing a few hours earlier. Those on-sale sites which also have an off-sale license only allow off-sales during off-sale hours.

Ontario bans off-sales entirely, largely in an effort to protect the monopolies of Liquor Control Board of Ontario and Beer Store retail chains.
