Off-year elections
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In American politics, an off-year election is generally considered to be the general elections held in odd-numbered years. These elections rarely feature any election to a national office, few state legislative elections, and very few gubernatorial elections. The vast majority of these elections are held at the municipal level. On the ballot are many mayors, a wide variety of citizen initiatives in various states, and many more local public offices.
The next off-year elections are scheduled for November 6, 2007. Kentucky and Mississippi will elect governors on the 2007 Election Day. Louisiana will also hold a governor's election in 2007; however, Louisiana's election dates do not conincide with the national day. Louisiana held its jungle primary on October 20l
Five states hold off-year state legislative elections: Kentucky, Virginia, New Jersey, Louisiana, and Mississippi, although Louisiana and Mississippi elect their state legislators to four-year terms and therefore necessitate elections only every fourth year (in 2003, 2007, 2011, etc.). All but Louisiana will hold their elections on November 6th in 2007. Louisiana's general election will be November 17th.
