OpenOffice.org Writer is an open source/free software word processor which is a component of the OpenOffice.org software package.

Writer is a word processor similar to Microsoft Word, with a roughly equivalent range of features. It provides a number of features not present in Word, including being able to export to the PDF format natively.

Writer is capable of opening and saving documents in a number of various formats, including Microsoft Word's DOC, RTF, XHTML, and the OASIS Open Document Format (its default format as of version 2.0).

As with the entire OpenOffice.org suite, Writer can be used across a variety of platforms, including Mac OS X, Windows, GNU/Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris.

Also a Portable version of OpenOffice Writer exists (as part of OpenOffice Portable) Which can be run off of a USB thumbdrive

Contents

OpenOffice.org Writer has been criticized for lacking a grammar checker, which Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Abiword, and other word processors have. Writer's mail merge functions, drastically rewritten with 2.0, are still less flexible and less stable then other word processors.
