The Order of British Columbia is British Columbia's highest award for outstanding achievement. Established by statute in 1989 the award is appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia based on recommendations from an advisory council.

The advisory council includes:

  • The Chief Justice of British Columbia (Chair)
  • The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly
  • A President, in turn, of one of British Columbia's Public Universities, for a two-year term
  • The President of the Union of B.C. Municipalities
  • The Deputy Minister responsible for the Order of British Columbia
  • Two past recipients of the Order

Past appointments include:

On May 18, 2006, Lieutenant-Governor Iona Campagnolo appointed 13 people to the Order.[1] These included Steve Nash, NBA basketball star, and Joy Kogawa, an author and poet.
