Reformed Oriental Orthodox

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Reformed Oriental Orthodox Church is a church that is in schism from an Oriental Orthodox Church. In at least some cases, the church would hold its older customs and traditions, but adheres to Evangelical doctrines. Currently two churches are known as "Reformed Oriental Orthodox".

The Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church or commonly known as The Mar Thoma Church was founded by the apostle St. Thomas in the year 52 A.D. The church was known then as the Malankara and was eventually associated with the Syriac Orthodox Church. During the time of the arrival of the Europeans. The Portuguese introduced Roman Catholicism to the Malankara Church. The church did not expect the Catholic Churches teaching and established the Connen Cross Oath of Mattancherry (1653). More than 100,000 faithful Christians confronted the Portuguese with cannons. Supporters declared that Archdeacon Thomas be Mar Thoma I. Later in the 1800's a Syriac professor and priest named Abraham Malpan introduced a changed liturgy. This huge reformation convinced many people of the Malankara Church to support the new changes. The metropolitan then excommunicated Abraham Malpan and went to his home parish at Maramon and celebrated the newly revised Holy Qurbana. He sent he nephew Deacon Mathew to Syria to be ordained as a episcopa. On his way back, he picked up a proclamation stating he was the metropolitan of the Malankara Church. This caused even a more stirr in the reformation. Eventually people who continued to follow the Catholicose were known as The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (Indian Orthodox) and the people who supported the reformation and Mathews Mar Athanatisus were known as the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church (Mar Thoma Church). However the Mar Thoma Church is in full communion with the Church of South India, Church of North India & the Malabar Independent Syrian Church in India which is Independent Orthodox.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tahadeso Church is a church that reformed its self from the Ethiopian Tewahedo Orthodox Church. It firmly believes in Jesus, Mary and the Holy Spirit. It is different from other Protestant churches in Ethiopia, but resembles the Penta-Church in the country
