Pachaiyar River

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pachaiyar River originates on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats approximately 1000 meters above sea level in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India.[1] It then flows in a winding course over the boundary between Cuddalore and Villupuram Taluks until in converges with the Tambaraparani River. Nine anicuts have been built across it before it loses its identity in the Tamiraparani.[2]

The total length of the river from its origin to its merger with the Tamiraparani is about 32 km.[3]

It flows into the Bay of Bengal about 3 miles north of Cuddalore.

Just before the Pachaiyar River enters the Bay of Bengal it is connected to the Godavari River via a channel called "the Malattar" which carries any surplus water from the Ponnaiyar to the Godilam.[4]
