"Pain" is the second single from rock band Three Days Grace's second album, One-X.
According to the band, the song is based on the pain and loneliness encountered on the road during their tours. The band describes this as when people are inches away from you, but you feel miles apart. They allow themselves to be immersed in pain and depression, while they try to listen to a voice that tries to help them break free of this pain.[citation needed]
"Pain" has become the band's biggest hit to date. On the Mainstream Rock chart, it reached #1 and stayed there for an impressive 13 consecutive weeks. It also hit #1 on the Modern Rock chart (the second single titled "Pain" to do such, the first by Jimmy Eat World) for 4 consecutive weeks, becoming their biggest hit on that chart as well. It has also hit #44 on the US Hot 100, becoming their first single to chart in the top 50 of the Hot 100. "Pain" was finally succeeded by Breaking Benjamin's newest single, "Breath" on the US Mainstream Rock chart, after 13 consecutive weeks at #1. In the top of the Modern Rock Chart, the single was succeeded by 30 Seconds to Mars's newest single "From Yesterday".
Pain also Held the number one spot on many Canadian Rock stations for weeks, and was the number one most requested song 10 weeks in a row.
Pain reached #1 On Much Musics Top 30 Countdown.
The song was also featured on an episode on Grey's Anatomy and "CSI: NY"
The video, directed by Tony Petrossian, features the band playing the song in what looks to be an abandoned mansion, and it also features shots of troubled youths who are lip-syncing to the song. At the end of the song, everyone (youths and the band members alike) is shown to be wearing a red "X" on the back of their necks.
There are currently two versions of the song Pain being played on radio stations, there is the original album version and an acoustic version. The acoustic version of Pain and Animal I Have Become are both available for download on most online music stores including iTunes.
