The national Cricket team of Papua New Guinea has Associate Member status at the International Cricket Council, of which it has been a member since 1973. It is part of that organisation's East Asia-Pacific development zone. Cricket in Papua New Guinea is controlled by the Papua New Guinea Cricket Board of Control.
Approximately 3000 Papua New Guineans play the sport of cricket. The country has never qualified for the Cricket World Cup tournament, but has competed in the ICC Trophy on all eight occasions that competition has been staged, their best result being a third-place finish in 1982.
The England wicket-keeper Geraint Jones was born in Papua New Guinea, although he moved to Australia with his parents soon after he was born.
In May/June 2007, Papua New Guinea will travel to Darwin to compete in Division Three of the ICC World Cricket League, where they will take on Cayman Islands, Fiji, Hong Kong, Italy, Tanzania and Uganda. A top two finish in this tournament would progress them to the next stage of qualification for the 2011 World Cup. Later in the year, they will play in the cricket tournament that is part of the South Pacific Games in Samoa.
