Phoebe Brand

Phoebe Brand was an American actress, who was blacklisted along with her husband, Morris Carnovsky, in the 1950s.
She was born on November 27, 1907, in upstate Ilion, New York. She eventually moved to New York City and became an actress, marrying Carnovsky in 1941 (until his death in 1992), and had one child, Stephen Carnovsky.
Phoebe and Morris Carnovsky, who was a famed Shakespearean actor, were original members of the legendary Group Theater with one-time Communist director, Clifford Odets. They were blacklisted in 1951, after director Elia Kazan named them as Communists to the House Un-American Activities Committee.
Phoebe Brand taught acting in New York into her 90s. She died in New York City on July 3, 2004, at the age of 96 from pneumonia.
