Piccolo (ピッコロ Pikkoro?) is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball metaseries. Piccolo was first introduced as the reincarnation of the evil King Piccolo, making him a demon and archrival of the primary protagonist named Son Goku. However, it is later revealed that he is from the race of alien beings called Namekians. Even though Piccolo is consistently referred to as a male, his Namekian ancestry makes him technically genderless. Another notable characteristic is the fact that Namekians must develop and age very quickly, seeing as how he was merely 36 when he died in Dragon Ball GT, but seemed to be getting old.

Piccolo's name is originally derived from the musical instrument, as all of the great Demon King Piccolo Daimo's henchmen had the names of various instruments. Around the start of the Freeza Saga, it's revealed that his name means "another world" in Namekian.[1]

After his narrow defeat against Goku, Piccolo is soon forced to form an at first uneasy alliance with Goku and his friends against newer, more dangerous threats. Out of necessity he also takes it upon himself to train Goku's child Son Gohan, forming a powerful bond which ultimately redeems him when he sacrifices himself to save the child's life. After his resurrection he fully joins Goku and the others in their struggles against ever more powerful villains.

Piccolo was originally introduced as Piccolo Daimao. (Piccolo The Great Demon King), the evil counterpart of Kami. Right before his original body was destroyed by Son Goku, Piccolo Daimao reincarnated himself into the form of an egg, which then hatched into his reincarnation named Piccolo Jr. Even though Piccolo by definition is actually a demon, his actual race is later revealed to be Namekian, which is extraterrestrial.

Piccolo is one of the few characters in the series whose appearance does not change drastically as the series continues. Being from another world called Namek, Piccolo appears as a typical Namekian; green skinned, hairless, and very tall. The only major difference between his original appearance in the manga and then his appearance in the anime is that in the manga he has four fingers on each hand while in the anime he has five fingers. Piccolo is known for his white turban and long white cape. He wears a purple Asian martial arts uniform (gi) underneath his cape, with a red obi (changed to blue in the anime), and light weight brown slipper-like footwear.

In his final moments, the Demon King Piccolo Daimao secretly created an egg that hatched Piccolo, essentially a reincarnation of himself. Piccolo spent the next three years in intensive training for the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai where he knew Son Goku would be a contestant. During this time, he went from a small child to a teenager within only three years thanks to his previous wish for eternal youth. Under the identity of "Ma Junior" (roughly translating to Demon Jr.), Piccolo entered the Tenkaichi Budokai. During the tournament, Piccolo fought a human possessed by Kami, Earth's guardian and god. In the battle, Piccolo trapped Kami in a bottle and swallowed the bottle, ensuring the god would not escape.

Piccolo then fought Son Goku in the final match[2]. After a long battle, Piccolo seemed to be victorious after breaking all of Goku's limbs and then unleashing a powerful attack on him; however Goku, having learned to fly in the past three years, avoided the attack and knocked Piccolo out of the ring. Instead of finishing off the defeated villain, Goku decided to keep him alive because he didn't want to lose his greatest rival[3].

Six years later, Piccolo was confronted by a Saiyan named Raditz who was vastly stronger than anyone on Earth.[4] Realizing this evil alien was a threat to his bid for world domination, Piccolo offered to team up with Goku to rid Earth of Raditz (who had kidnapped Goku's son, Son Gohan ).[5] The two were victorious, although Goku sacrificed his life so that Piccolo could deliver the finishing blow.[6][7] As Raditz died, Piccolo revealed that Goku would be brought back to life with the Dragon Balls, inadvertently alerting two even stronger Saiyans, Nappa and Vegeta, about their existence.[8]

The Saiyans would arrive in one year to claim the Dragon Balls and then destroy Earth, so Piccolo decided to train Goku's 6-year old son, Gohan[9][10] - ironically, Piccolo grew fond of the boy.[11] When the Saiyans arrived, they headed to Piccolo first, as he was currently the strongest being on the planet. They recognized him as a Namekian, another alien race.[12] Even Piccolo was not a match for the Saiyans, although they planned to keep him alive since he was linked to Kami - Piccolo's death meant Kami died as well, and if Kami died, the Dragon Balls became normal stones. Upon discovering that there were more Dragon Balls on the planet Namek, the Saiyans deemed Piccolo to be useless[13] and Piccolo died saving Gohan.[14][15] The Earth's Dragon Balls then ceased to exist.

In the afterlife, Piccolo and the other fighters who were killed trained with the North Kaio.[16] Piccolo was eventually wished back to life on Namek with the Namekian Dragon Balls to help fight Freeza.[17] A dying Namek named Nail fused with him, which gave Piccolo enough power to defeat Freeza's second form on his own.[18] When Freeza transformed into his third form however, Piccolo was defeated[19] and later returned to Earth via the Earth Dragon Balls.[20]

Later in the Cell Saga, Piccolo participated in the battles against Dr. Gero's artificial humans.[21] However two of the artificial humans, No. 18 and No. 17 proved too powerful and defeated Piccolo and the rest of Earth's heroes[22]. In desperation, Piccolo decided to fuse with Kami, becoming one entity.[23] This new character had his power and his intelligence increased. Using this newfound power Piccolo fought another of Gero's creations; Cell.[24] After Cell escaped, Piccolo fought No.17 again and fought evenly with him,[25] until Cell returned, intent on absorbing No. 18 and No. 17. Powerless, Piccolo was defeated soundly by Imperfect Cell and was seemingly killed until he was saved by Goku[26][27]. For the rest of the Saga, Piccolo stayed on the sidelines, watching as Vegeta and Future Trunks fought Semi-Perfect Cell and later as Gohan finally defeated Perfect Cell.

In the Majin Buu Saga Piccolo along with Goku, Gohan, Vegeta and Kuririn attempted to help the Kaioshin stop the evil wizard Babidi from resurrecting the Djinn Majin Buu. Piccolo however has turned to stone by Dabra, one of Babidi's minions and remained in that form until Dabra was killed by Majin Buu. In an attempt to create a warrior powerful enough to defeat Buu, Piccolo and Goku taught Son Goten and Trunks the fusion technique. This allowed the two to fuse into Gotenks. Piccolo witnessed the battles Buu had against Gotenks and later Gohan but was later killed when Kid Buu destroyed the Earth. He was later brought back to life by the Namekian Dragon Balls.

In Dragon Ball GT, Piccolo remains on Earth when it is about to be destroyed by a wish granted by the Black Star Dragon Balls, in order to prevent them from being used for evil again. Later, Piccolo forces himself into hell to allow Goku to escape hell himself. Unfortunately, this made it so that Piccolo would have to remain in hell forever, although he becomes somewhat of a hero there.

Piccolo has shown many abilities throughout Dragon Ball. Some of these abilities include him being able to extend his arms to great lengths, as well as to increase his body size to massive parameters. Being a Namekian,[28] Piccolo can regenerate damaged parts of his body, as long as his head is still intact.[29] Piccolo also has the ability to conjure various objects.

Like many other characters in Dragon Ball, Piccolo has the ability of bukujutsu, a technique that allows him to fly. One of Piccolo's most powerful attacks is the Makankosappo , Special Beam Cannon or Light of Death, an attack that is expelled from Piccolo's index and middle fingers.[30][31] Piccolo is also seen have an attack called the Masenko or Demon wave, which Piccolo teaches to his pupil Son Gohan.
