A playback singer is a singer whose vocals are pre-recorded for use in films. The singer records the song on a soundtrack and the actors or actresses lip sync the song for the cameras. This is a format that is most highly developed in the Indian sub-continent. Although lip sync is also used in films produced in Hollywood and other film centres, making these recordings has not typically been an avenue to fame for singers elsewhere in the way that it has been in India.
Playback singing is a very important part of Indian and Nepali culture; most hit Bollywood and Kollywood films are musicals. Popular playback singers in India enjoy the same star status as famous actors. The songs of a film and the quality of the music, and its music director (composer), lyricist, and singer, have often determined the success of a film. Often soundtrack albums are released before the films are released. For this reason there is sometimes a mismatch between the songs in a film and the songs on its CD, LP or tape.
