Plochman's is one of America's oldest brands of mustard. It is possibly America's second best known brand of mustard after French's and one of the most popular.[citation needed] It is known for its innovative yellow barrel squeeze bottle.

According to the company website, in 1852 Premium Mustard Mills was founded in Chicago, Illinois. This was the company that would become Plochman's. In 1871, Premium was one of the businesses that survived the great Chicago fire. In 1881, Moritz Plochman, a trained chemist, immigrated from Germany. In 1883, he purchased Premium Mustard Mills and began distributing products by horse and wagon. He began producing horseradish, chow chow, and soft drinks at Premium Mustard Mills. When yellow mustard became popular in 1904, Plochman's began producing it alongside other products. In 1912, Carl Plochman took over the company and in 1930, moved it to Cicero, Illinois. In 1957, Plochman's introduced the first successful squeeze condiment when they used plastic to create the squeeze barrel, a bottle that has represented the brand ever since. In 1971, a patent was awarded for the squeeze barrel. In 1989, Carl Morris Plochman (called Terry) became the fourth generation of the family to head the company. In 1995, Plochman's introduced squeeze barrels of its traditional mustard flavors, such as Dijon and spicy mustards as a new Premium line. In 1997, the company moved to its current home in Manteno, Illinois and in 2001, Plochman's introduced an online mustard lovers club.

Plochman's is still best known for its barrel bottle of yellow mustard.
